The original motivation for building the SKA was to detect neutral hydrogen gas in
normal galaxies at very early epochs in the Universe.
Such an experiment promises a
particularly exciting result. The vast volume of space probed
by such a galaxy survey will provide a measure of the relationship between
the amount of mass and the amount of radiation emitted by galaxies throughout
the Universe. With this information, we will be able to calculate the Equation of State of the mysterious Dark Energy. It will also be possible to
map out the strength of Dark Energy as a function of cosmic
epoch.
